It was a dream come true as Thato ‘Captain Charisma’ Bonokoane presented himself with a perfect birthday gift in Gqebera on Sunday.
Bonokoane, who turned 32 on Saturday, won the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) junior-featherweight title with a majority decision over Argentine foe Diego Alberto ‘El Profeta’ Ruiz at the Feathermarket Theatre in Gqebera.
After 12 rounds of action, the judges’ score cards read 114-114, 116-112 and 117-111 signalling that Bonokoane had prevailed over the Argentine.
Bonokoane’s victory came just three months after he stopped Filipino boxer Jhaleel Payao at the Steve Tshwete Banquet Hall in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
Meanwhile, Matshidiso ‘Scorpion Queen’ Mokebisi successfully defended her South African female junior-featherweight title against Monalisa Takane in the main supporting bout.
This was Kroonstad-born Mokebisi’s fourth fight this year. Before meeting Takane, Mokebisi defeated Zimbabweans Patience Mastara and Chiedza Homakoma.
She only lost to Katie Healy from Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom when they fought for the vacant WBF female junior-featherweight title in April.
