Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has spoken out after winning his first Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates leading Amakhosi to a 1-0 victory at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg, on Saturday afternoon.
Midfielder Yusuf Maart’s goal in the second half earned Amakhosi the crucial three points as they moved to third place on the DStv Premiership standings.
“We came knowing it very well it was not going to be an easy game for us playing against a team that had been doing well,” Zwane said.
“We had to come up with a plan. Obviously, giving them space outside rather than allowing them to come in the middle because they’ve got very dangerous players who are very good on the ball.”
The former Chiefs midfielder insisted that their plan worked well in neutralising Pirates during the match.
“I think our plan worked very well. But if you can suffocate a team of Pirates’ calibre with so much quality on the field and make them look ordinary on the day, that tells you the plan was well executed,” Zwane remarked.
“You would see we had two chances that we could have buried, but we couldn’t. We started slowly. It was a worrying factor for me. Second half, I think the game was evenly-balanced.”
Amakhosi’s next Premiership match is against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday, 31 December.
