The Proteas’ woeful batting was laid bare as they struggled to 149 for six in their second innings at stumps on day four of the third Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

After Australia declared on 475 for four, the Proteas were at one stage 37 for three following captain Dean Elgar, Sarel Erwee and Heinrich Klaasen’s dismissals.

It was left to Temba Bavuma and Khayelihle Zondo to steady the sinking Proteas’ ship. Bavuma knocked 35 off 74 deliveries and Zondo hit 39 after facing 83 balls.

Marco Jansen on 10 from 33 balls and Simon Harmer on 16 after facing 18 balls will resume batting on Sunday.
