It was second time lucky for Soweto-born boxer Khaya Busakwe as he won the South African lightweight title at the Orient Theatre in East London on Friday evening.
An unfortunate shoulder injury that Lusanda Komanisi suffered in the third round handed Busakwe the SA title. This was the second time Busakwe was making an attempt to win the national title having been stopped by former champion Tshifhiwa Munyai in May 2021.
Both boxers were beginning to warm up when Komanisi, who was making his first defence of the title he captured when he defeated Munyai in September last year, dislocated his shoulder after throwing a straight right and fight referee Siphiwo Mbini counted him out.
Meanwhile, Asanda Gingqi was victorious in his first fight in the junior-lightweight division after former champion Sibusiso Zingange injured his shoulder in the seventh round during their bout.
This was the second time that such an incident happened to Zingange as he suffered the same fate when he was dethroned by current SA junior-lightweight champion Lunga Sitemela in Johannesburg last May.
