Upington City from the Northern Cape are the ABC Motsepe League national champions after they beat Orbit TVET College 3-1 in the play-offs final played at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday afternoon.
With both sides having already made it to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Orbit College were the first to register on the scoresheet through Upington City goalkeeper Kwazi Nxumalo’s own goal in the fifth minute.
The own goal didn’t deter the boys from the Northern Cape as they searched for an equaliser, which came in the 37th minute through Willie Nel.
Orbit College from the North West were reduced to 10 men in the 75th minute after their goalkeeper Johnny Mathole was sent off for denying Daweron van Rhyn an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
After Orbit College defenders failed to clear from an Upington City attack, the Northern Cape side took the lead when Dellmico Malgas headed in past Zuko Mgidi in the 83rd minute. Three minutes later, the Northern Cape ABC Motsepe League champions made it 3-1 through Malakia Sefoli’s header off a corner kick.
