Nozwelethu Mathontsi does not feel any threat to her nine-year reign as a South African female junior-flyweight champion as she counts days before she squares up against Owethu Rula.

Mathontsi is going to defend her crown against Rula from Gqeberha at the Orient Theatre in East London this coming Friday.

“I’m waiting for her to come and try to take my title away from me. This title belongs to me. She’s joking if she says she will beat me. I’m ready for her,” Mathontsi remarked.

Though she’s confident about successfully defending her title, Mathontsi, who is a former SA female flyweight champion, has admitted that Rula is a closed book to her.

“I don’t know her. I have never seen her fighting. I have only been told about how she fights. She will come here and then return to her home empty handed,” Mathontsi said.

Mathontsi will be fighting for the first time since her stoppage loss to Tanzanian opponent Halima Vunjabei at the Meropa Casino, Polokwane, in September 2021.

The Mdantsane lass won the SA title when she dethroned Lisbeth Sivhaga at the Orient Theatre in East London in June 2014 and has made two successful defences against Nthabiseng Didi. She has registered nine victories (three stoppages) and two losses.
