Legendary former Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City forward Frank ‘Jingles’ Pereira has passed away. He was 77.
Portugal-born Pereira, a deadly striker who was turned into a defender, made a name for himself at Highlands Park, CT City and Chiefs. As a striker, he won the 1976 Golden Boot award after he netted 20 goals.
Pereira joined Chiefs in 1979 after he was recruited by the late former Amakhosi coach Mario ‘Godfather’ Tuane. The Chilean-born Tuane converted Pereira into a defender the following year.
Pereira whom football fans called ‘Baba kaSibongile’ left the Soweto giants in 1983 having won four trophies with the Phefeni Glamour Boys during the 1981 season.
After leaving Amakhosi, Pereira went on to become player/coach at Benoni United until 1985. Pereira coached Orlando Pirates in 1986.
