This coming year is going to be interesting in South African boxing circles as Minister of Sport, Zizi Kodwa, is taking the fight to the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA).
Kodwa’s upcoming fight follows after the NPBPA interdicted the installation of the new board of Boxing South Africa (BSA) earlier this month.
“As soon as I come back, which is next week, I think I will be able to make up my mind. Obviously, the outcome of the case we are challenging in court although the court has not dealt with the merits of the case about consultation or no consultation. We will ventilate when we get to court that we’ve done everything sufficiently according to the law and the Act, especially section 9, sub-section 2,” Kodwa said.
Kodwa added that the return of director of operations Mandla Ntlanganiso, who was suspended for more than four months without being charged, and his installation as acting BSA chief executive officer gives him comfort.
“You must remember that when they left they had withdrawn charges against Mandla and appointed him as acting CEO. Now I’m applying my options legally, whether to appoint an interim board or an administrator or whether those two functions can be done by the acting CEO or not,” Kodwa remarked.
“You must remember that the board is not involved in the day-to-day running of the sport. You’ve got the management there. Mandla is responsible for that.”
The seven-member board which was appointed by Kodwa and then interdicted by the NPBPA includes its chairperson Sifiso Shongwe, Luxolo September, Sakhiwe Sodo, Romy Titus, Princess Mangoma, Nande Mheshe and Dr Mary-Gene Manthata-Setati.
