History-making Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams refused to take all the glory after he lead the South African senior national men’s team to the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.
Williams played a starring role, saving four penalties as Bafana beat a game Cape Verde on spot kicks at the Charles Konan-Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro early on Sunday morning (South African time). The match was decided on penalties after Bafana and the Blues Sharks drew goalless in two hours of football.
“No, it doesn’t mean anything. The fight, the desire we had, to fight for 120 plus minutes, that’s what matters to me. To see the brotherhood out there, to fight to keep going, that’s what is important. I will receive the trophy on behalf of all the players, technical team, the staff, everyone that has been on this journey,” Williams, who won the man-of-the-match award, said.
Gqeberha-born Williams became the first goalkeeper in AFCON history to save four spot kicks in a penalty shoutout. He also equalled his compatriot Andre Arendse’s 1996 record of four clean sheets at the AFCON finals.
