Veteran defender Marc van Heerden announced his retirement from professional football on X on Sunday evening.

“I officially retire from the game that has given me everything. I came into this game as boy and leave as a man, 20 years on and I start my coaching journey,” Van Heerden wrote on X.

The 36-year-old Van Heerden spent the last two seasons at Cape Town City having joined them from Cape Winelands side Stellenbosch FC.

Johannesburg-born Van Heereden also played for AmaZulu, Orlando Pirates, Chippa United and the University of Pretoria.

“I leave with giving my all. This is the end of this chapter and the beginning of a new. Thank you to the beautiful game,” he said.
