A brave Lubabalo Kweyi is eyeing the South African junior-lightweight title as he has challenged the current champion Asanda Gingqi to defend against him.

Already, the 23-year-old Kweyi from Mdantsane has made his intentions clear by submitting a challenge form to Boxing South Africa (BSA).

“We have sent the challenge form to BSA, challenging for the South African junior-lightweight title,” Kweyi’s manager Thembelani ‘Shakes’ Hlombe told Ink Sport.

Kweyi, who has a professional record of three wins with three stoppages and two draws, is yet to fight since he defeated Bulelani Ngondeka in October last year.

On the other hand, the much-experienced Gingqi is fresh from an African Boxing Union (ABU) junior-lightweight title contest against Tanzanian boxer Tony Rashid Ngongo. Gingqi emerged victorious from the bout as he outpointed the Tanzanian at the Orient Theatre in East London last month.

Gingqi, who is also from Mdantsane, last defended his SA crown when he defeated Khanyisani Mbokazi in his second defence in East London last December.

The 32-year-old Gingqi, a former national featherweight titlist, has 16 wins with nine knockouts and three losses. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
