Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has admitted that the South African senior men’s national team received a tough draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana were drawn in Group A against co-hosts Mexico, a winner of the UEFA play-offs as well as Korea Republic.

“It’s a tough draw. We have Mexico and probably Denmark, two big teams, so it will be difficult for us to finish in first or second place. Maybe we can become one of the eight best third-placed teams. We have to focus on that,” Broos said.

Bafana face Mexico in the opening match of the World Cup finals at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Thursday, 11 June. It’s going to be exactly 16 years since Bafana played against Mexico in a 2010 World Cup opener at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

Seven days later, Bafana face the European play-offs winners – Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland, Denmark and North Macedonia – at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, United States of America (USA).

Broos’ boys finish their group stages campaign with a clash against Korea Republic at the BBVA Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico on Wednesday, 24 June.
