It looks like world boxing champion Kevin Lerena is considering a switch from the fistic sport to mixed martial arts (MMA) before he hangs up his gloves.

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Lerena, the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) bridgerweight champion, said that he would fill any venue in South Africa should he make the switch from boxing to MMA.

“If I did an MMA fight in South Africa, I would sell out even whether it’s Grand West, Superbowl, whatever arena we have because my boxing fans plus MMA fans, an ultimate cross over. We’ve got a few options on the table and one thing I can tell you is if I do the cross over, I will sell out any arena in South Africa,” Lerena said.

Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Lerena also revealed that there’s a deal he will be tying up regarding making the second defence of his WBC bridgerweight title.

Lerena, the former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) cruiserweight champion, stopped Ukrainian boxer Serhiy Radchenko in his first defence of the WBC title at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria in May last year.

“We got a possible promotional deal on the table. A five-fight deal with a newly-forged promoter. We have a world title defence that is offered to us in a foreign country,” Lerena said. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
