It’s a patient wait for boxing trainer Alan Toweel and his boxer Tuvia Wewege as they are waiting for the day the date of the boxer’s fight against reigning South African light-heavyweight champion Bryan Thysse would be announced.

Gqeberha-born Wewege, who is rated number one in the country, has challenged Thysse and his challenge was approved by Boxing South Africa (BSA) in April.

A statement from Boxing South Africa (BSA) said in April: “Tuvia Wewege has officially raised his hand and issued a direct challenge to the reigning champion Bryan Thysse. BSA has reviewed and approved the bout, ensuring that the light-heavyweight division remains active and fiercely contested.”

Wewege has not fought since he defeated Jackson Masamba by a split decision at the Victory Theatre in Houghton, Johannesburg, in August last year.

He lost by a split decision when he fought against Thysse at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, in March last year. After that, Thysse went on to win the then vacant SA light-heavyweight title with a ninth round stoppage of Michael Head last October.

And in March this year, Thysse put his titleon the line and then made a successful first defence of the national crown when he outpointed his cousin Gerhard Thysse.

Toweel said: “Nothing has been signed yet and Tuvia is waiting patiently. I believe he’s got a very good chance to take the South African title. He lost to Thysse last year and many people still think he won the fight. The three fights he lost were all split decisions. The fights could have gone either way. We really can’t wait for the date of the fight against Thysse to be announced.”

Interestingly, Wewege has fought most of his fights away from home and only three of his 10 fights were held in front of his home fans in Gqeberha. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
