As he is preparing for next week’s fight against Namibian opponent Paulus Amavila, Wasim ‘Kleurling’ Chellan is also eyeing the South African welterweight title current held by his conqueror, Phaphama Rhonorhono.

Now fight starved, Mthatha-born Rhonorhono won the national title after he shocked Chellan with a second round stoppage in Cape Town last September.

“Essentially, I would like to get another shot at the SA title. First, I have to take care of business next week. I see that Phaphama is defending against Jabulani Makhense,” Chellan remarked.

Chellan added: “My promoter is looking at all alternatives if that title fight does not happen. I’m staying ready for whatever opportunity that comes along.”

While Rhonorhono will only have his first fight since winning the SA title, Chellan has already fought twice, winning both fights against Prince Dlomo and Malangana Nzama by early stoppages.

Rhonorhono is now set to travel to Malamulele, Limpopo, where he is scheduled to make the first defence of his crown against Jabulani Makhense next month. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
