Durban-based boxing trainer Sean McMinnie is not overly concerned about the fitness of Jose Kadima from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as he’s continuing preparing for his clash against Ugandan boxer Herbert Matovu in two weeks’ time.
In a fight which will see bangers clashing against each other, unbeaten Kadima faces Matovu in a World Boxing Council (WBC) Africa heavyweight title contest at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday, 11 July.
Kadima put Johnny Muller to sleep in the first round when they clashed at the same venue last month. That win was preceded by another victory over Brazilian boxer Mateus Munhoz da Penha in March.
“The preparations are going well after coming from two back-to-back fights. We didn’t really have to worry about fitness because the man is already fit. He just took a small break and we then continued sharpening his skills,” McMinnie said.
McMinnie and Kadima are leaving for Gauteng on Saturday where they will continue with their preparations with also a view of acclimatising to the Highveld weather conditions.
Kadima will go to the fight carrying an unblemished record of eight wins with six of those victories coming from knockouts. On the other hand, Kampala-based Matovu has a professional record of nine wins with eight stoppages and a loss. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
