Even though he’s yet to sign the fight contract, Asanda ‘Dynamite’ Gingqi is confident that he will still be the South African junior-lightweight champion even after his clash against challenger Katlego ‘Kat’ Khanyisa.
Gingqi is due to make the fourth defence of his SA title when he meets Tembisa-born Khanyisa at Selborne Park, KuGompo City, in two months’ time.
Having won the SA title after he defeated Sifiso Hlongwane in August 2023, Gingqi last defended his national crown when he outpointed Lubabalo Kweyi at the Orient Theatre, KuGompo City, in December.
“I’m going to fight in September against Katlego Khanyisa, who has been approved by BSA. I’m preparing for a tough battle because he will be coming here to fight. No one is gonna take the title away from me, that includes Khanyisa,” Gqingqi remarked.
Gingqi, who has 19 wins with nine knockouts and two defeats, suffered a majority decision loss to former SA junior-lightweight champion Azinga ‘Golden Boy’ Fuzile in KuGompo City three months ago. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
