Brian Mitchell strongly believes that his boxer, Charlton Malajika, got robbed of an opportunity to become a World Boxing Council (WBC) International bantamweight champion after his fight against Zambian opponent David Mwale was declared a draw.
Mitchell, who manages the 25-year-old Malajika, reckons that his charge did enough to win the fight, which was held at the Government Complex in Lusaka, Zambia, on Saturday evening.
After 10 rounds of action, where Malajika clearly dominated, the judges’ scorecards read 94-96, 96-94 and 95-95, resulting in Mwale retaining his title.
“We got robbed with a draw. We know we won in Zambia, we conquered. We proved a point that Charlton Malajika is hot news,” Mitchell remarked.
This was the first time Malajika, who is an International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Youth bantamweight titlist, fought since his fourth round technical knockout win over Filipino boxer Froilan Saludar last October. On the other hand, Mwale was fighting for the third time this year.
Following the Mwale fight, Malajika’s record stands at nine victories with four knockouts, a loss and a draw while the Zambian southpaw has 13 wins with seven stoppages and a draw. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
