The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach on Tuesday morning succeeding Belgian Hugo Broos, whose five-year contract expired in July.
The former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns mentor returned to the Bafana hot seat 14 years after he was fired as their coach. He was confirmed at SAFA House in Nasrec, Johannesburg.
“I know that this is bigger than Pitso Mosimane. I accept this role with great humility,” Mosimane remarked.
On the work that was done by Broos, Mosimane said: “I think way before I have recognised and praised Hugo Broos for what he’s done, I appreciate the work Broos has done. He has laid very good foundations for us, he has done exceptionally well. I’m not saying it today only, I’ve said it before. He has put a good foundation for me. I appreciate the work Broos has done and everyone else has done”
Mosimane is the most successful coach in South Africa by far. He coached Bafana between 2010 and 2012 and got the boot after the national team struggled during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The 62-year-old Mosimane is the only South African coach to have won three CAF Champions League trophies – two with Al Ahly and one with Sundowns.
