Bafana Bafana produced a brilliant performance as they hammered Eritrea 5-0 in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday evening.
After coach Pitso Mosimane was forced to make an early change, bringing on Brooklyn Poggenpoel for the injured Bathusi Aubaas in the 12th minute, Relebohile Mofokeng gave Bafana the lead following a pass he received from his former Orlando Pirates teammate, Oswin Appollis, in the 19th minute.
Mofokeng, who plays for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League, completed his brace off a Samukele Kabini pass on the stroke of half-time.
Seven minutes into the second half, Sphephelo Sithole scored Bafana’s third goal and Iqraam Rayners made it 4-0 from an Appollis pass in the 63rd minute. Luther Singh drilled the final nail into the East Africans’ coffin when he scored Bafana’s fifth goal in referee’s added time.
This was Bafana’s second successive victory in the AFCON qualifiers as they beat Guinea 2-1 in their opening qualifier held at the Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto last Saturday.
