Benni McCarthy has come up with a lot of excuses after his team AmaZulu were bundled out of the MTN8 by Cape Town City at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday evening.
The Citizens beat Usuthu 2-1 with goals from Terrence Mashego and Mduduzi Mdantsane while Lehlohonolo Majoro scored for the Durban side.
“We created a lot of chances. It wasn’t meant to be. The last 30 minutes of the first half we completely dominated, we created chances,” the Usuthu coach said.
“The rustiness of not having the best of preseason with a lot of players with medical conditions. The finishing let us down. The end product wasn’t there.”
McCarthy reckons that his former team knew what they wanted, especially in the second half.
“Second half, we came back and we just continued where we left off in the first half. Unfortunately, Cape Town City made changes. They sat back and tried to hit us on the counter and it was bound to happen,” McCarthy moaned.
“We chased the game, we wanted to finish it in 90 minutes. Maybe it was a little bit naive as well protecting the 1-1 going into the game preparing for extra time. Unfortunately, one mistake, with the quality that Mdantsane has there was going to be one outcome as he got into the box. He aimed for the top corner, difficult skill to do, but he managed to score his goal.”
Meanwhile, Usuthu open their DStv Premiership campaign with an away clash against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria on Friday evening.
