One of the most decorated players in South African football Hlompho Kekana completed 10 years as a Mamelodi Sundowns player on Monday.
And in the decade spent at the Tshwane giants since joining them from Bloemfontein Celtic Kekana has won 12 trophies.
“Today marks the 10th anniversary of me signing with Mamelodi Sundowns,” the 36-year-old Kekana said on his Facebook page on Monday.
“The opportunity to play for this team was one I couldn’t let pass. This past decade has reminded me what it meant by ‘sky is the limit’ and the success on the field is something that as a little boy I could only dream of.”
As captain, Kekana from Zebediela in Limpopo led the Brazilians to success including winning the 2016 CAF Champions League trophy.
“There have been some beautiful memories, adventures and stories that the people who shared their journey alongside me have lived,” Kekana said.
Arguably the best Sundowns captain ever, Kekana has struggled to get game time at the team since last season.
“I’ve gotten the opportunity to captain the side and develop my leadership skills. I’ve gotten to learn lessons about football, business and life from coaches, teammates and so many other great people and beautiful souls who make things easy for us players. I’m grateful to have gotten to be part of and help build on the legacy of this wonderful club,” Kekana said.
Kekana made history in March 2012 when he scored seven goals during Sundowns’ 24-0 win over Northern Cape amateur side Powerlines FC in a Nedbank Cup match.
In the 10 years Kekana spent at the Brazilians, he won six league titles, two Nedbank Cup trophies, two Telkom Knockout trophies, one CAF Champions League trophy and the CAF Super Cup.
