A two-day boxing indaba, which was scheduled to take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth starting on Thursday, 21 January until the following day has been called off because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth in particular, is a hot spot with
COVID-19 cases rising on a daily basis something, which has contributed to Boxing South Africa (BSA) cancelling the indaba.
BSA announced late in 2020 that an indaba was going to be held in Port Elizabeth to give boxing stakeholders a chance to trash out issues, which continue to hamper the progress of the fistic sport in South
Africa.
However, acting BSA chief executive officer Cindy Nkomo has revealed that her organisation has decided to cancel the indaba.
‘‘It’s not going to be staged,’’ Nkomo said on Wednesday.
‘‘Remember, we now have level three regulations on gatherings. And unfortunately we don’t think the virtual option is going to be viable for this part. So BSA has recommended to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality that we must cancel and look for a date in the future.
That’s where we are now.’’
Last week Dream Team Promotions’ Lebo Mahoko and Johannesburg-based boxing trainer Manny Fernandes urged BSA to postpone the indaba until the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided.
