World title hopeful Azinga ‘Golden Boy’ Fuzile will follow in the footsteps of other South African boxers, who fought at the Madison Square Garden when he clashes with Kenichi Ogawa from Japan on Saturday, 27 November (28 November, South African time).
Fuzile and Ogawa meet in a vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-lightweight title contest at the Hulu Theatre, Madison Square Garden, in New York City.
Zolani Petelo, a former IBF minimumweight champion, is the last South African boxer to fight at Madison Square Garden when he lost to American Ricardo Lopez in an IBF junior-flyweight title contest in September 2001.
Former national heavyweight champion Johnny Squires was the first South African boxer to grace the prestigious American venue even though his clash against Young Stribling Junior only lasted 44 seconds in September 1928.
Lodewikus van Heerden also known as George ‘Boer’ Rodel, Albert Scott and Willie Toweel are the other South African fighters, who fought at the famed venue.
