The contribution made by former professional boxer and boxing promoter Mzamo William ‘Smoking Joe’ Mandyu is going to be remembered at a memorial service in Bongweni, Khayelitsha, on Thursday.

The former boxing trainer’s memorial service is going to be held at the Assemblies of God, Bongweni, starting at 16h00.

‘Shamba’ as Mandyu was known, was one of the most knowledgeable personalities in South African boxing having promoted a number of bouts including Vuyani Bungu’s clash against Fransie Badenhorst.

Mandyu together with former players and administrators were honoured by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in 2018.

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais recognised Mandyu’s work in developing boxing in the province and capped him at a ceremony, which was held at the Kronenburg Estate in
Paarl.

Mandyu, who was born in Worcester in the Western Cape, is going to be laid to rest on Saturday, 2 January 2021.
