A battle between two unbeaten boxers – Mdantsane’s Asanda Gingqi and Thembani Mbangatha from Cape Town – has been approved and the fighters are going to clash for the vacant South African featherweight title.
This was confirmed by Boxing South Africa (BSA) sanctioning committee chairperson Sakhiwo Sodo on Tuesday.
Previously, BSA ordered Mbangatha and Abdulaziz Kunert to fight for an interim SA featherweight title something which didn’t go down well with some licensees. However, sanity has prevailed now as Gingqi and Mbangatha are set to square up.
“As a matter of fact, the matter has now been resolved. The featherweight belt will now be contested in the next 90 days. This is fully in line with the prescripts guiding professional boxing in the country,” Sodo said.
Whoever wins between Gingqi and Mbangatha is going to defend against Kunert.
“All the three affected stables were part of the discussions today and are in full support of this resolution,” Sodo said.

Gingqi has won all his six fights with five of them being stoppages while Mbangatha is yet to lose or draw in 11 bouts and has also stopped five of his opponents.
