It’s going to be more like a baptism of fire for acting Chippa United coach Siyabulela Gwambi when he leads the Chilli Boys against log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in a DStv Premiership fixture at Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London on Monday (15h00).
Gwambi finds himself facing the Sundowns’ brains trust – Manqoba Mngqithi, Rulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela – after he was appointed acting Chilli Boys coach following Dan Malesela’s sacking last weekend.
The Chilli Boys are desperate for maximum points having last won more than two months ago. The Brazilians also need the three points in their bid to cement their strangle hold on top of the Premiership standings.
“Everyone is looking forward to the Sundowns game and beyond. You know when you’ve got a good mood at training it will always give you what you want in terms of reaching objectives of a training session. Everything is going well so far,” Gwambi said.
“When you play against log-leaders and you are right at the bottom you see yourself beating them. In so doing you only realise later that the points you get after beating log-leaders are the same points that will get you out of the relegation zone.
“It excites the players that they are going to play against the opponents on Monday. We understand that we’ve got a huge responsibility on our shoulders. I believe the boys can do it against the log-leaders.”
A Chilli Boys win will go a very long way in their quest to move up the log standings. Currently, the Chilli Boys are 14th on the Premiership table.
