Having watched her charges come from behind to beat their Zambian opponents 3-1 in an international friendly match at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says the game fulfilled their aims.
Banyana Banyana trailed 1-0 after Barbara Banda had given the Malawians the lead, but a brace from Noko Matlou and Thembi Kgatlana’s goal gave the South Africans victory.
Before meeting Olympics-bound Zambia, Banyana Banyana had last played in November 2020.
“First half, they scored and no goalkeeper could have saved that. We scored a fantastic goal by Noko. The second one came and we were in control. We were always wary of counter attack. We also had players who threatened them,” Ellis said.
“We were a little bit rusty. The aim was to win the game. We wanted to see certain things. We have to always look for improvement.”
Meanwhile, Banyana Banyana face Botswana in another friendly match set for the Milpark venue on Tuesday at 15h00.
