The South African Football Association (SAFA) announced Belgian Hugo Broos as the new Bafana Bafana coach on Wednesday.
The former Belgian national team defender got the Bafana Bafana job after SAFA fired Molefi Ntseki following his failure to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.
“I’m very proud and happy to be coach of South Africa. Let’s start and rebuild the team to qualify for the World Cup. For me, it’s very important to come to South Africa as soon as possible. We will do everything to qualify for the World Cup next year,” Broos said.
The 69-year-old Broos, who is going to arrive in South Africa next week, led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to Africa Cup of Nations glory in 2017. The Indomitable Lions beat Egypt 2-1 in the final in Libreville, Gabon.

Broos’ immediate task is to take Bafana Bafana to the 2022 Fifa World Cup finals in Qatar.
Most of the Bafana Bafana players, who are older than 30 are going to be culled to make way for the young generation.
Meanwhile, the head of the SAFA technical committee Jack Maluleke revealed that they received more than 200 applications for the Bafana Bafana job.
“We received more than 200 applications. We got people we never thought would be interested in this job of Bafana,” Maluleke confirmed.
