Log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns edged closer to winning the DStv Premiership trophy when they beat TS Galaxy 1-0 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday afternoon.
The win took Sundowns’ points tally to 57 after winning 16 times, drawing nine matches and losing once.
Peter Shalulile’s goal scored in the 17th minute ensured victory for the Brazilians. This was the Namibian’s 11th goal of the season.
The Rockets had an opportunity to earn a point from the match when they got a penalty in the 31st minute. This was after Mosa Lebusa had handled the ball inside the box.
Veteran midfielder Lindokuhle Mbatha stepped up only for his penalty to be saved by Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene in the 32nd minute.
This was the sixth time out of nine that the Rockets have failed to convert a penalty this season.
Mathematically, the Tshwane giants are just two victories away from winning the DStv Premiership title, especially if AmaZulu, who are second on the log, win all their remaining four matches.
Coach Benni McCarthy’s Usuthu have collected 50 points from 26 games with four matches before the end of the season.
