Chippa United have appointed former Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt as their new mentor.
Hunt was unveiled at a press conference at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Wednesday morning. The four-time league-winning coach has signed a two-year contract with the Chilli Boys.
“I welcome our coach. His coming here is more than to coach Chippa United. He’s here to establish this organisation, to assist the people of the Eastern Cape,” Chilli Boys chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi said.
“Hunt is one of the top mentors. After speaking to him, he understood the vision. He’s going to make a difference. We are going to support him as a team. We want our identity to change. It’s the season to change identity.”
Hunt’s appointment follows the departure of Lehlohonolo Seema, who was confirmed as new Lamontville Golden Arrows this week. Cape Town-born Hunt, 56, was fired by Amakhosi towards the end of last season.
“Obviously, the chairman Mr Mpengesi has been talking to me. People have been coming and going. We had a long discussion about it. The most important thing is to get the team competitive,” Hunt said.
The Chilli Boys finished 15th on the DStv Premiership table last season. They retained their Premier Division status after the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs where they beat and drew with Richards Bay FC.
The Gqeberha-based club also had two walkovers after Royal AM failed to pitch for their matches.
