Just over two weeks since his appointment as Chippa United coach, Gavin Hunt says there’s still a lot that he needs to do at the Gqeberha-based side.
The four-time league title winner was given one of the most difficult tasks in South African football as Chilli Boys chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi expects him to perform wonders at the club.
The Chilli Boys finished 15th on the DStv Premiership table last season. They retained their top-flight status after the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs.
“I’m enjoying it. Obviously, there’s a lot of things that we need to do. It’s one step at a time. The players have been responsive, very good so far,” Hunt said on Friday.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach has picked up a number of things, which he hopes to fix before the 2021/22 season begins in August. Chief are among those things is the balance of the team.
“We need to get the balance of the squad right, that’s important. I mean you can’t have nine centre midfield players, no right side, no left side players or centre backs. That’s what I’m talking about,” Hunt said.
The former Hellenic centre back revealed that he has not ruled out the possibility of bringing more playing personnel to the Chilli Boys to make sure that they don’t struggle next season.
“Yeah, there’s a lot going on. I’m speaking to the chairman on a daily basis and there’s a lot of things we are working on backwards and forward. It takes time,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chilli Boys are going to continue using the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha and Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London as their home grounds.
