Mdantsane boxer Asanda Gingqi lived up to his pre-fight talk and became the new South African featherweight champion following his split decision win over Abdul-Aziz Kunert at the Booysens Boxing Gym in Johannesburg on Sunday evening.

The unbeaten Gingqi, who improved his record to seven wins with five stoppages, faced a tough foe in Kunert before outpointing his Cape Town-born opponent.

It was clear from the first round that Gingqi was in a mission to win the vacant national title as he worked hard. He pushed very hard even when it looked like Kunert was trying to steal the fight.

This was definitely not an easy fight as Gingqi came up against a determined opponent in Kunert, who has now lost for the first time in 11 bouts.
