The bell has rung for the last time for two-time South African champion Victor Mpiyakhe, who passed away aged 74.

Pimville-born Mpiyakhe, a former South African featherweight titlist, passed away on Monday.

Mpiyakhe turned professional in 1971 and retired in 1982 to carry on as a television producer at the SABC.

He produced Blow by Blow when it was fashionable for the public broadcaster to show live boxing on TV.

The former school teacher won the SA featherweight title when he defeated Gideon Borias at the DH Williams Hall in Katlehong, Germiston, in October 1975. He lost the title to Tsietsi Maretlooane in Mary 1976.

He reclaimed the SA featherweight title when he defeated Bashew Sibaca in April 1978 only to lose it to the same Sibaca a year later.

Mpiyakhe fought against the likes of Nkosana Mgxaji, Alfred Buqwana and Thomas Sithebe just to mention a few.

He registered a professional record of 19 victories with three stoppages, 12 losses and four draws.
