Legendary Roger Feutmba believes that Vincent Aboubakar, the Indomitable Lions captain and top goalscorer at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament currently underway in Cameroon, can take his country further in the biennial showpiece.

The 29-year-old Aboubakar has set the AFCON tournament alight scoring five goals in three group stages matches.

“He’s a good player, a top striker any team would want. He has proved himself. You must remember that he has been in the team for 12 years,” Feutmba remarked.

“He has lots of experience and I believe that he’s one of the players who can make the Cameroon national team go far in this AFCON. He’s the top goalscorer and I hope he’s going to continue scoring goals. He’s an asset in the Cameroon national team today.”

Aboubakar, who plays for Saudi club Al-Nassr, is playing in his third AFCON tournament. He played during the 2015 and 2017 tournaments.

He scored the winning goal when the Indomitable Lions defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt 2-1 to lift the AFCON trophy at the 2017 tournament in Gabon.

Aboubakar was also in the Indomitable Lions squads at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa and Brazil respectively.

“If he doesn’t get injured and continues doing what he’s doing he will carry the Cameroon national team. He has competed at this level for a long period of time,” the former Indomitable Lions and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder said.

“I believe that it’s not a mistake that he’s the captain of the team. He’s now the best player in that team. I just hope that those around him will give him all the necessary support.”
