Uruguay and Ghana have failed to advance to the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals currently underway in Qatar.

This is so despite Uruguay beating the Black Stars 2-0 in the final group stages match at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar, on Friday evening.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta headed in to give Uruguay the lead after Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi had failed to handle Luis Suarez’s attempt in the 26th minute.

The experienced Suarez turned provider yet again when he passed to Arrascaeta, who completed his brace in the 32nd minute.

The Black Stars were the first to get a scoring opportunity after they were awarded a penalty in the 21st minute. This was after VAR consultation revealed that Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet had fouled Mohammed Kudus. Black Stars captain Andre Ayew’s penalty was saved by Rochet much to the delight of the Uruguay supporters.

Meanwhile, Korea Republic joined Group H winners Portugal in the second round of the tournament. This comes after the Taegeuk Warriors defeated Portugal 2-1 at the Education City Stadium in Doha.
