Young East London trainer Khangelani Jack scooped the Trainer of the Year award at the South African Boxing Awards ceremony held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban on Friday evening. 

The 33-year-old Jack, who trains Nhlanhla ‘Mount Kilimanjaro’ Tyirha and SA featherweight champion Zolisa Batyi, beat veteran trainer Vusi Mtolo, Bheki Mngomezulu and Sizwe Mthembu to the award. 

Phumelela Cafu’s rematch against Jackson Chauke was voted as the Male Fight of the Year award winner. This bout was pitted against Sinethemba Blom and Kaine Fourie’s fight while Tyirha’s fight against Filipino boxer Esneth Domingo as well as the bout between Brandon Thysse and Roarke Knapp were also in the running.

Meanwhile, the South African female junior-bantamweight title contest between Bathabile Ziqubu and Thema Zuma won the Female Fight of the Year gong.
