Changes are on the cards as Manny Fernades is set to replace Vusi Mtolo as chief trainer at the Brian Mitchell Boxing Academy in Edenvale.

Ink Sport can reveal talks are an advanced stage to install Fernandes as chief trainer after Mtolo broke away to open his own gym.

“I’m still in meetings with Brian and the team regarding that matter. We are still negotiating,” Fernandes said on Wednesday.

Fernandes is an experienced trainer, who guided former boxers Isaac Hlatshwayo and Takalani Ndlovu to International Boxing Federation (IBF) title glory.

Mitchell, an erstwhile World Boxing Association (WBA) and IBF junior-lightweight champion, said when contacted for comment: “I’m still on vacation at the moment. There’s talks that Manny Fernandes is joining us though nothing has been confirmed yet because we’re busy with negotiations. Vusi Mtolo is looking at opening his own gym.”

Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from Mtolo failed as his cellphones rang unanswered.
