The late legendary sport commentator Dumile ‘Phesheya Phaya’ Mateza was honoured posthumously at the South African Sport Awards ceremony held at the Sun City Superbowl in Rustenburg on Sunday evening.
Minister of Sport Zizi Kodwa awarded Mateza, a former football, boxing, rugby and athletics commentator, with the Andrew Mlangeni Green Jacket award.
The iconic Kareedouw-born Mateza, who was a walking library, passed away in Johannesburg in February 2022 after battling cancer.
Mateza was a former acting chief executive officer of the then South African National Boxing Control Commission (SANBCC) and also served as a board member of Boxing South Africa (BSA).
