Two fierce body shots from Mexican boxer Sergio Mendoza Cordova quickly ended his fight against Mpumelelo Tshabalala in Hermosillo, Sorona, Mexico, on Sunday morning, South African time.
The International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-flyweight elimination bout ended in the third round after Tshabalala didn’t survive the second body shot. This was the first time Tshabalala, a former South African and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior-flyweight champion, fought outside the country.
Tshabalala’s journey to Mexico was not short of drama after he together with his team were turned away from the OR Tambo International Airport as they didn’t have transit visas to pass through the United Kingdom.
That delayed his departure and he only left South Africa together with Vusi Malinga on Monday with Peter Malinga joining them later in the week.
