The South African boxing community woke up to the very sad news of the passing away of former champion Unathi Myekeni on Tuesday morning. She was 44.

Myekeni, an erstwhile World Boxing Federation (WBF) junior-featherweight and featherweight titlist, succumbed to cancer after she had been sick for some time.

She was the younger sister of the late Mhikiza Myekeni, a former World Boxing Council (WBC) International flyweight, International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and SA junior-flyweight champion, who also succumbed to cancer in August 2022.

In a 12-year career inside the ring, Myekeni, a former mineworker in Carletonville, fought 18 times, registering 12 wins with five stoppages, five losses and a draw.
