Just over two months since he relinquished the South African cruiserweight title, Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu, has travelled to Canada for a clash against Cuban opponent Lenar Perez Fransua.
The duel between Mchunu and the unbeaten Perez is set for the Montreal Casino in Quebec, Canada, early on Friday morning, South African time.
“We arrived here last week and we are fighting on Thursday. Thabiso is looking good and ready for the fight,” Mchunu’s trainer, Sean Smith, said.
The 38-year-old Mchunu from KwaXimba in KwaZulu-Natal goes to the fight on the back of a first round stoppage win over Namibian, Khareb Shitana, in Johannesburg in April.
Fighting out of Toulouse in France, Perez defeated former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) super-middleweight champion, Isaac Chilemba, in his last fight held at the same Montreal venue in March this year.
Perez has a very impressive record of 16 wins with 14 knockouts compared to Mchunu’s 25 victories with 14 stoppages and eight losses.
Meanwhile, this is a very important fight for the 28-year-old Perez, who was born in Holguin, Cuba, as he will be out to make sure that he maintains his lofty world ratings.
He’s rated fourth by the World Boxing Association (WBA), 10th in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) ratings and is placed ninth in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO). – Monwabisi Jimlongo
