Former South African champion, Irvin Buhlalu, has resigned as chairperson of the Boxing South Africa (BSA) sanctioning committee after more than two years at the helm.
The erstwhile SA lightweight champion’s resignation was announced by BSA in a statement on Wednesday evening. Buhlalu had occupied the position since March 2024.
“BSA confirms that the chairperson of the sanctioning committee, Mr Irvin “Pretty Boy” Buhlalu, has tendered his immediate resignation from the committee, citing personal matters,” a BSA statement said.
And Buhlalu said: “I needed to take this break. I will not be lost in the sport of boxing, I will bounce back when the time is right, boxing is in my blood.”
Following Buhlalu’s resignation, BSA has appointed Droeks Malan as acting chairperson of the sanctioning committee, effective immediately.
Meanwhile, BSA also announced that Lebogang Phatlhane is the acting provincial manager for Gauteng, Free State and North West following Hloks Ramagole’s resignation.
“BSA is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Lebogang Phatlhane as the new acting provincial manager for the Gauteng, Free State and North West. Mr Phatlhane is a full-time employee at BSA head office, based within the operations directorate. He holds an Advanced Diploma in Sport Management and a National Diploma in Sport Management, bringing both academic rigour and operational experience to the role,” BSA said in a statement.
Phatlhane is going to be assisted by veteran ring official Thabo Spampool, who will assume responsibility for tournament supervision in the three provinces.
“Both Mr Phatlhane and Mr Spampool were formally introduced to licensees and were warmly received by the sector. BSA is confident that their combined expertise will ensure a smooth transition and continued excellence in provincial operations,” the BSA statement concluded.
