He might not have won the DStv Premiership match against Cape Town City at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Wednesday, but Chippa United coach Kurt Lentjies is happy that they at least managed to pick up something from the game.
The Chilli Boys were held to a goalless draw by the Citizens and Lentjies regards the point as very important in their fight to avoid the axe or ending the season in a play-off spot.
“A point at home. We have not won at this stadium since 2020, that’s a bit of a struggle for us. But the guys gave a very good account of themselves. I’m very pleased with the performance,” Lentjies said.
It was a game of two halves as the Chilli Boys created a number of scoring chances, which they failed to convert into goals with Azola Matrose and Bienvenu Eva Nga being the main culprits in the first half.
The Chilli Boys survived after hardworking Citizens attacking midfielder Mduduzi Mdantsane missed a penalty in the last quarter of an hour of the match.
“First half, we had the best of chances, but we couldn’t score. Second half, it was more dominated by them. But let’s take a point at home, it’s better than nothing,” the former Chilli Boys and Maritzburg United midfielder remarked.
The Chilli Boys’ next match is against bottom-of-the-log side Baroka FC at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday (15h00) while the Citizens will welcome TS Galaxy at the Cape Town Stadium on the same day at 19h30.
