Former world and South African champion Lusanda ‘Mexican’ Komanisi has explained why he decided against facing Azinga ‘Golden Boy’ Fuzile.

Ink Sport can reveal that Rumble Africa Promotions (RAP) offered Mdantsane-born Komanisi the fight against Fuzile last week.

“Yes, I was offered a fight against Azinga. I turned it down after we didn’t agree on the purse. It’s not gonna happen simply because his camp refuses to pay,” Komanisi said.

Komanisi is now preparing to defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan-African lightweight title against Tanzanian Cosmas Cheka at the Meropa Sun Casino in Polokwane on Sunday, 26 June.

“Azinga’s promoter approached my promoter and offered me the fight. I didn’t entertain that because they were offering the same amount as the one I’m going to get in my upcoming fight. It doesn’t make any sense,” Komanisi said.

Aseza Somagaca, RAP director of operations, said: “We offered him a purse and he accepted it only to come back a day later asking us to top it up. We agreed and gave him a good offer. He came back to us again declining our offer saying he’s number one in the ratings and stands a chance of fighting for the SA title.”

Meanwhile, Komanisi will be fighting for the first time since he stopped Kabelo Bikitsha in the seventh round during their fight at the Orient Theatre in December last year.

Komanisi, a former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and South African featherweight champion, is trained by Vusi Mtolo.
