Chippa United are not going to move away from their Port Elizabeth base in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro despite the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was confirmed by Chilli Boys chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi after a meeting with Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) bosses in East London on Thursday.
The Nelson Mandela Bay is being ravaged by a second wave of COVID-19 and continues to record high numbers of daily infections and active cases.
‘‘Of course we are concerned and worried about what is happening ‘because it affects all of us. But I mean as a club we are full compliant. We have compliant officers and are doing a wonderful job,’’ Mpengesi said.
‘‘We are teaching our guys about all the protocols including sanitising. They need to avoid going to some areas. We are supporting our community and we are fighting this COVID together. The issue of us running away from it is not going to happen.’’
Meanwhile, the Chilli Boys have penned a new deal with BCMM and will now play seven matches in East London.
The previous deal between the Chilli Boys and BCMM saw the Port Elizabeth club playing five leagues matches a season in East London.
‘‘We are happy now that we will be playing some of our games here in East London. We are going to play seven games here. We are also happy with the financial terms and we are appreciate this municipality,’’ Mpengesi said
