East London boxing trainer Mzamo ‘Chief’ Njekanye is going to sit down with Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Simnikiwe Bongco and map the boxer’s wayforward.

Bongco made history last week when he won South Africa’s first boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games in eight years.

The 21-year-old lad from Duncan Village in East London won a bronze medal in the middleweight division.

“I’m proud of what the boy has achieved. We are going to sit down together and do an assessment and also hear what he has to say about his career,” Njekanye said.

“The reality is that one needs to capitalise on opportunities that he gets. However, it would be wrong of me to force him to turn professional or force him to remain as an amateur.”

Bongco, who lost to Australian Callum Peters in the semi-finals, is expected to return to South Africa from England on Wednesday.
