Azinga ‘Golden Boy’ Fuzile ended 2021 with a whimper after he was defeated by Kenichi Ogawa in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-lightweight title fight in the United States.
Now Fuzile wants to end 2022 with a bang as he clashes with Mexican boxer Rene Tellez Giron in an International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Intercontinental lightweight title contest at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday.
“My main aim is to end the year on a positive note unlike it was the case last year. I have to win this fight and see what will happen after that. I want to close this year having won a title. I have not won a title for some time now. I believe a win will open doors for me. I might even fight for the world title. I also want to be rated by major boxing bodies,” Fuzile said.
The former South African featherweight champion has only fought once this year – defeating Malawian Romeo Makwakwa by a stoppage in East London five months ago.
Already, the 23-year-old Tellez Giron from Queretaro in Mexico is in South Africa after landing in the country on Monday.
Interestingly, the 26-year-old Fuzile and the Mexican have identical professional records – 16 wins (10 stoppages) and two losses.
