Mamelodi Sundowns became the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup following a 3-1 win over Marumo Gallants at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Thursday evening.
Sundowns’ Namibian-born goalpoacher Peter Shalulile beat Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi to give the Tshwane giants the lead in the eighth minute.
The 30-year-old Shalulile completed his brace when he scored his fourth goal of the competition in the 26th minute. Arubi thwarted Themba Zwane’s attempt, but couldn’t stop Shalulile from scoring his second goal of the match.
Gallants didn’t give up even though they were trailing by two goals and their efforts bore fruits when Boitumelo Pheko beat Sundowns goalminder Denis Onyango with a left footer from outside the box from a Lucky Mohomi pass in the 33rd minute.
Shalulile was not done yet as he netted his third goal of the match and 13th overall in the Nedbank Cup competition. The former Highlands Park forward is now the Nedbank Cup’s all-time top goalscorer.
