Saturday’s boxing tournament, which was set to be held at the Sun City Superbowl in Rustenburg has been called off just a day before it was due to take place.
The tournament, which was going to be promoted by Ayanda Matiti’s Xaba Promotions, was set to be headlined by an IBF International junior-bantamweight clash between Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu from Duncan Village in East London and Mexican boxer Rosendo Hugo Guarneros Gonzalez.
In a statement released on Friday, Xaba Promotions said: “It is with heavy heart to communicate that due to unforseen circumstances our international event scheduled for the 27th of May will no longer proceed. With some funders pulling out at the last moment, Xaba Promotions alone is unable to carry this event on its own to its logical conclusion.”
South African flyweight champion Jackson ‘M3’ Chauke was also going to fight in the same tournament. He was scheduled to face off against Filipino boxer Jayson Vayson in an IBF Intercontinental flyweight bout while Khaya Busakwe had been due to defend his SA lightweight title against Ayanda Nkosi.
Meanwhile, this is the second tournament to collapse in the last hour in less than six months as the same happened to the J4Joy Boxing Promotions show in December.
Boxers, including those from overseas, were already in Durban by the time the J4Joy Boxing Promotions tournament was called off.
